Suggest Treatment For Pain In Lower Back And Buttocks

My father in law broke a vertebrae in his back and has been told to gradually stop wearing his support brace. He is complaing of aching and some pain in his lower back and buttocks. Are there any excercises he can do to stop this and strengthen the muscles?
