Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Left Leg Caused By Long Walks

I have a pain in my left leg everyday toward the end of the work day. I work in a production room and my day requires me to be on my feet the whole day and my steps throughout the day amount to about 7-9 miles during my 9 hour shift. The pain is behind my mid thigh and is moderate to the point that I begin limping and feel relief when I bend over with my hands on my knees. Lately I have had tingling in the same leg after the pain comes on, I can feel it from my thigh down to my heel. I thought it was fatigue from all the walking but it s been going on for awhile makes me wonder if it could be something more. Please advise. Thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic tissues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves.

If this is not your case then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form.

You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures.

Also, you should have Aspirin and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks.

In most cases it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
