Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Leg Extending Towards Knee

Pain in right hip. Over brief time, it extends to the knee. This is new. Have taken 2 Tramadal (sp?) today w/ no benefit. Then took 6 ibuprofen which provided relief. Need to know if / how long I can continue on ibuprofen, and if not so long, what else I could do / take. Thanks. Waiting. John M. Baker: YYYY@YYYY .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to have sciatica. It's sciatic nerve compression. It needs to be investigated &treated specifically.
* Take complete rest till the pain subsides.
* You can have hot or cold compression
* Over the counter anti-inflammatory drug Ibuprofen (dose according to age and weight) after food.
In case of no relief you need injectables. After relief:
- Avoid bending.
- Do extension exercises
- Consult an orthopedic or physiotherapist for personally suitable management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
