Suggest Treatment For Pain On Face When Suffering From Sinusitis

Hi there , for a long time I would occasionally get severe shooting, searing and electric like pain in my face, mainly the right side. It would last a while and go away. However in December I had it really bad and the doctors said it was a sinus infection and gave me antibiotics. They did not help however the pain reduced greatly for a month or so. The pain has now been back for about 3 weeks with no relief. They gave me more antibiotics but they have not helped at all. I went to the dentist had x day done and it has nothing to do with my teeth. Now the pain doesn t necessarily get worse when I touch my face. The pain is the worst I ve ever felt and seems to come in a series of episodes. I will get relief for about a half hour a couple times a day. These last 3 weeks of pain have really affected my quality of life . It mainly affects one side of my face but the other side sometimes hurts too. Could it possibly be trigeminal neuralgia?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms you does not seems suffering from Sinus infection and it almost exactly appears like symptoms of TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA which occurs most commonly due to compression of the trigeminal nerve with a major artery and compression of the nerve causes disturbance in the function of the trigeminal nerve..

Other causes can be nerve compression by a tumour, mutltiple myeloma etc.

The short episodes of electric shock like pain affecting one side of face is a hallmark feature of Trigeminal Neuralgia and the pain can trigger with even basic activities like laughing, chewing, touching the affected side of face , at times with a splash of air while at times spontaneously.

You should consult a NEUROPHYSICIAN and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and investigations like MRI SCANNING can help in confirming the diagnosis.

If trigeminal neuralgia is diagnosed he/she can advise you to take medicines like Carbamazipine which is an anticonvulsant and is used to trat nerve induced or neurotic pain.
Other drugs like Gabapantin and baclofen can also be given to you..

In case if the medicines does not provide relief or the pain episodes does not reduce in frequency the neurophysician can advise you to consult a Neurosurgeon and surgical treatment like Microvascular decompression can be advised to relieve the pressure from the nerve by separating the artery that is causing compression..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
