Suggest Treatment For Painful Inguinal Hernia

My father has an inguinal hernia that he s had for many years. Suddenly it has become painful. Is this something he should go to the emergency room for or just make an appointment with his primary doctor? I m worried it may have ruptured or become strangulated. Thanks!

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

He should be seen as soon as possible. It is possible that the hernia is strangulated where part of the bowel or the outside of the bowel has become caught.

He should be seen to ensure that this is not the case.

If it is an emergency situation then surgery would be needed.

I hope this helps
