Suggest Treatment For Panic Attack During Pregnancy

My grand daughter is 28 with 4 young boys 1-7. She is separated form her husband as of January. She is pregnant and just had her 1st panic attack. Her mother and brother both have panic attacks that are untreated. Any advice would be gratefully received.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Panic disorder (PD) is a common psychiatric illness that can affect a pregnant woman. On one hand, untreated anxiety in pregnant women may adversely affect the developing fetus. On the other hand, medicines used for the treatment of panic disorder may have deleterious effects on developing fetus. Benefits must outweigh the risks involved while treating panic disorder with drugs during pregnancy. However, a perfect diagnosis by expert in needed. As this is the first attack of PD, it is better to go for counseling rather taking medicines. Consult a psychiatrist of your local area so that diagnosis will be done. A psychiatrist is the best person to take decision whether to treat with medicines or not.
Thanks!!
