Suggest Treatment For Persistent Bouts Of Diarrhea
My husband had a bilateral cerebellar stroke 10 months ago but is making a remarkable recovery. Dysphagia, however, is a major problem, in that he still is unable to consume enough food by mouth and is still using a PEG. He has experienced several bouts of diarrhea, and I m wondering why I cannot give him pepto bismol through the PEG. I have calls in to a dietician and two doctors, but I won t hear back from them until tomorrow.
I am sorry for the health problems your husband is going through.
PEG (percutanous endoscopic gastrostomy) provides a meaning to insert a feeding tube into the patient's stomach through abdominal wall.
I am sure the dietitian has helped you determine which food/drinks you should insert into the PEG, the speed and what precautions you should take.
As this is not a natural way of feeding, the end point is the patient (your husband) would suffer bouts of diarrhea. Changes foods/drinks you give to him will also regulate the bowel movement until you see his doctor. You can give probiotics in the PEG meanwhile without any problem hoping he will be better.
Wish fast recovery.
