Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough And Chest Congestion

Hi. Over the past 2 weeks, after a flight to the East Coast from Idaho, I have had a cough that has persisted. I took it to be a virus I had picked up on the plane. Figured it would last a week and be done. Over this period, it has progressed into my sinus....to the point where I am now taking over the counter sinus relief every 4 hours. Although it seems to clear up the head a bit, it does not ease the cough at all. Hearing in my left ear is down a bit, but I have always had a little hearing loss in that ear. Anyway, I suspect now that I may have an ear infection and that is draining down into my throat and causing the dry cough. Have not pain out of anything....just a persistant cough and head congestion.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

An upper respiratory infection may get complicated with a sinus infection and in this case, cough can go on for longer and the head congestion as well.

Most of the time, if you do not have a high fever or strong headache, all you need is just nasal saline irrigation of the nose and sometimes local steroid spray (fluconazole) may be tried.

If you develop a fever or severe headache antibiotics such as augmentin or doxycycline can be used, thus a visit with your doctor is needed to confirm the need for antibiotics and obtain a prescription.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
