Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough And Pain In The Ribs

Hello, I am a 46 year old female smoker who has had what I believe to be bronchitis for 3 weeks. I have a bubbling feeling when inhaling while lying down which then produces a cough. Cough has been productive but, very difficult to get up. Yellowish green mucus. Now pain in both ribs more so the right side. Please advise... Just a nasty bronchitis or should I be seen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you are having cough for 3 weeks & are also a smoker, you should get yourself physically examined to prevent your symptoms from getting worse. You will have to go through few investigations like Sputum examination & culture, Pulmonary function tests, Chest X-Ray, CT Scan, Blood tests. These tests will help to diagnose the factor(pathology) causing you such discomfort. Treatment will depend upon the severity of the disease detected.

In the meantime, you can take Combiflam (Paracetamol & Ibuprofen) when pain. You will be treated with antibiotics, medications for COPD, Bronchodilators or Steroids. Stay away from addictions, stop smoking. Eat homemade healthy food, do regular exercises, take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
