Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a persistent cough for over 4 weeks. I have a rattle in my chest, but have had 2 xrays and no sign of pneumonia. Now have a head cold or sinus infection with it. I am getting very little sleep at night due to endless coughing episodes. Allergic to penicillin and codeine.
I'm sorry to hear that you have had a cough for this long. While usually the cough from a normal upper respiratory infection goes away within 2-3 weeks, sometimes they do last longer, or it is also possible you have been infected with another virus.
Also, if you are having a sinus infection, sometimes the drainage can cause a persistent cough with it as well.
For the sinus infection, I would recommend using a nasal steroid spray, and you may need antibiotics (such as doxycycline) if it persists.
For the cough, I would recommend using an antihistamine decongestant combination, like Claritin D or Zyrtec D, and anything with dextromethorphan in it, such as Robitussin.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
