Suggest Treatment For Persistent Headache

My wife has had a headache for over a week now. She has been checked by her doctors in the past and MRI done and can not find something in her head area. She was involved in accident where she was hit by a drunk driver back in 1977 when she was 12 years old. She had internal bleeding and head injuries and was in an induced coma for 3 days. Since there was not the advance equipment we have now could there be possible effects from this and affecting her head area. The headaches are sometimes worst than migranes for her. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The headache after severe head injury usually decrease in intensity after 1 year, but may persist for life. Sometimes attacks are very painful. This happens because of nerve entrapment at injury site, painful scarring, fractured bone micro movements, dural tear. It can even induce depression, psychosis, insomnia (lack of sleep).

Usually pain presents at episodes of severe pain, at injury site, sometimes tingling sensation, more pain after stress (mental or physical), usually not associated with vomiting.

treatment of pain is
: Reassurance to the patient
: Avoid mental or physical stress
: Rule out other causes like eye disease, hypertension, tension headache, migraine after consulting doctor.
: You can give her tablet Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription.
: If still no relief, you can give her tab Duloxetine/Gabapentine after proper prescription.
: Head massage
: Maintain hydration.
: Avoid pressure at injury area.

Hope it will help her. Still no relief, you can provide more details of her pain by asking another question or consult doctor.

Thanks. Take care.
