Suggest Treatment For Persistent Headaches And Cough

I have a had a headache for 4 days now .. I am fine when I am lying flat on my back but when I am upright I have a lot of pressure it is not constant only when I stand up, sit down, do stairs, etc ... - enough to make me gasp at times. It is making my eyes hurt and I am actually getting nauseas from the pain. I very rarely get headaches and this is making me very nervous. It hurts a lot when I cough, sneeze and swallow as well. I have tried every OTC pain medicine and nothing is touching it.

Hi,

Persistent headaches can have several causes, and it's important to see a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Based on your symptoms, your headache may be related to a sinus infection, tension headache, or even migraine. The cough and pain with coughing may also suggest an upper respiratory infection.

You may consider scheduling an appointment with your primary care doctor, who can perform a physical exam, review your medical history, and recommend further testing or treatment as needed. In the meantime, you can try some self-care measures to help alleviate your symptoms, such as getting plenty of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, applying a warm compress to your forehead, and avoiding triggers that may exacerbate your headache (such as loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells).

If your headache becomes severe or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, such as fever, neck stiffness, or confusion, you should seek medical attention immediately. These symptoms may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as meningitis or a brain injury.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Persistent headaches and cough can have many causes. Based on the information provided, here are some suggestions that may help alleviate the symptoms:
1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to help thin mucus and prevent dehydration, which can aggravate headaches and cough.
2. Rest: Try to get enough sleep and take frequent breaks throughout the day to rest your body.
3. Use a humidifier: This can help moisten the air and relieve dryness in the throat, nose, and sinuses, which can contribute to headaches and cough.
4. Avoid triggers: If you notice certain foods, drinks, or environmental factors that seem to trigger your symptoms, try to avoid them.
5. Try over-the-counter remedies: Medicines such as decongestants, cough suppressants, and pain relievers may help alleviate symptoms. However, be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
6. Consult a doctor: If the symptoms persist or worsen, or if you have other symptoms such as fever, difficulty breathing, or confusion, seek medical attention immediately. Your doctor may recommend further tests to help identify the causes too your symptoms.

I also recommend to monitor your blood pressure and record the results for future reference.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
