Suggest Treatment For Persistent Scabies

Hi, My son, age 21 has had scabies on and off since the beginning of July! He has been to the urgent care clinic twice and they have prescribed the premethrin cream both times. He has followed the directions carefully and we have completely cleaned the house and his bedroom repeatedly, He has been cleaning his room and washing and drying his bedding on high heat about every 3 weeks. He has probably used the cream treatment about 6 or 7 times. He began itching again last week and made an appt with a new doctor. The doctor saw him Friday and didn t want to give him any cream because he said that he didn t have any visible rashes. Now, 2 days later he has several red bumps on his penis. He thinks he is beginning to get rashes on his shins. The doctor said to call him if he began to get rashes and he would prescribe him the premethrin cream. Should he continue to use this cream or is there another way to treat this? Also, we have followed all of the directions and advice from doctors and research for cleaning and trying to prevent this. What do you suggest? I am worried about the amount of toxicity that he is using with all of this!! Please advise!!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have persistent scabies .The symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons like allergic reaction ,side effect , sensitivity to sunlight ,eczema and psoriasis , Well scabies is a skin infestation caused by a tiny microscopic bug known as the human itch mite . I would suggest you to consult dermatologist for proper examination . Rash and burrows are the main signs that doctors use to determine if you have a scabies infestation. Doctor may take skin sample for lab test , sample is examined under a microscope to confirm the presence of mites or eggs . Doctor may prescribe 5 percent permethian cream , 25 percent benzyl benzoate lotion and percent sulfur ointment . Keep your cloths seprate from rest of the family . Maintain personal hygiene . For now apply cold compresses and take benadryl .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
