Suggest Treatment For Pineal Cyst

Hi, I have been diagnosed with a pineal cyst measuring 17mm x 13mm x 9mm. About 7 weeks ago I fell down 6 or 7 stairs. I didn t hit my head but had symptoms of whiplash. The following day I developed sudden numbness in my face, which spread to my earlobes and down one side of my neck. I also lost my hearing in one ear, then regained it in that ear and lost it in the other. These symptoms lasted for a few hours before disappearing. Since then, I experience these symptoms periodically, though not to the extent that I experienced them that first time. However, I have also felt tingling and numbness in other areas since, including my left leg, foot and arm. I also feel like I have a build-up of pressure in my ears (like they are constantly blocked). It was because of these ongoing symptoms that I had a CT scan done, where they identified the cystic lesion, and this was followed up with an MRI. Is it possible that the cyst developed as a result of my fall? And/or is it possible that the numbness and hearing loss I experience is a symptom of the cyst? The only explanation I had been offered, before the cyst was found, was that swelling (7 weeks later?!) developed after the fall and is pushing on nerves (sometimes is but sometimes isn t?!).

Hi,

It is true that as Pineal gland diseases are not so common, it takes time to Diagnose. As a general rule, Doctors first have to think about more common diseases. Now as it is confirmed large pineal cyst, we can correlate all her symptoms due to Pineal cysts, and its pressure on the surrounding structures of mid brain.

Cyst is actually a thin walled water fluid swelling. Good news is that, now a days there is very good prognosis of this disease. Most of these are benign, and can be removed surgically. You should expect your Neurologist to do complete clinical examination for hearing, Vision, reflexes, Coordination tests, balance tests. He will do fine needle aspiration guided under CT scan.

May be he will be able to drain all the fluid present in the cyst. This is important to relieve her of all her symptoms, and to diagnose the cause of it also. Hopefully, she will just be perfectly normal. She may have to undergo annual CT scan for follow up.

As she is already seeing Endocrinologist, he or she would be able to evaluate the need for some hormonal medicines. You must feel free to ask any concern you have regarding your Doctor's plan for management of this disease. I am hopeful, that soon your daughter will live a normal life. I have an experience of such case.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,
