Suggest Treatment For Pitting Edema

My husband sprained his ankle days ago, and is still in a lot of pain with pitting edema. The Dr. Said he has ligament and tendon damage and wants to see him again in a week. I am concerned with the amount of swelling and fluid in his ankle/foot. Is it dangerous to have that much pitting edema with pain? Could there be a clot?
