Hi my 83 year father is bed - ridden he is on the large side but has recently built up a large amount of fluid on the right side of his body. When the nurses come to roll him he can only roll one way because of the fluid. Doctor has mentioned antibiotics but has not followed through with a prescription District Nurse says nothing can be done he is now becoming very breathless. HELP!
Since. he is bedridden, having breathlessness and his pleural effusion is large, we need urgent pleural fluid aspiration or ICD (intercostal drainage) insertion.
He might be having malignant pleural effusion or tubercular effusion because he is worsening with antibiotics.
Aspiration or ICD insertion will give him symptomatic relief (in breathlessness) and provide fluid for laboratory diagnosis. So, it is better to consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
