Suggest Treatment For Prolapsed Uterus And Bladder

I m almost 71. I have prolapsed uterus & bladder. I had DCIS last year (2014) with mastectomy Aug 2014 and did not have to have any follow up treatment. I had some minor reconstruction because of excess tissue left on chest. I would like hysterectomy done thru vagina. What i am most worried about is the fact that being under anesthesia - especially more than once - at my age may cause some kind of cognitive decline. I know it is a risk, with women being especially at risk. Is it possible to do hysterectomy vaginally without putting patient under general anesthesia? Thank you.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Here I will clarify two points:
1. Anesthesia will not cause any cognitive decline on the long term. Effects are short term only (48-72 hours maximum)
2. It is not possible to do hysterectomy without anaesthesia, as this is a major procedure. Reaction of our body to such pain will be much more deleterious than anaesthesia itself.

But, depending on your general condition, opting spinal anaesthesia over general anaesthesia will relieve your worries further. Spinal have negligible effect on brain and cognition. This you can discuss with anaesthetist.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
