Suggest Treatment For Prolonged Depression

Hello, my name is Dan, I have been suffering from Depression from most angles, I suspect for about 10yrs. I have always had a sleep disorder, for some reason I battle falling asleep and take sleep meds, but I also fight to stay asleep not wanting to face the day, have no interest in most everything, I am not finding anything enjoyable and go out of my way NOT to address my business obligations, in which I used to love and find challenging. I am alcoholic, sober now for 13mths, however, I am very concerned as I am missing out on life as well as not interested in socializing or relationships etc. I do see my physiologist this Friday, any ideas or advice, I am considering checking myself into the hospital (behavior health). I am also wondering if anti-depressant medication would help but am afraid of side effects. I am very intelligent, fun and witty, but all I want to do is nothing. Please hep if you can. Thank you, Sincerely, Dan K

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Depression is something that should be given medical attention on time, rather than waiting for its good that you are thinking of seeking help.

I would say it a good decision and you should meet a psychiatrist as he will examine you and diagnose you first.

After that, he will suggest you medicines if needed or sometimes other therapies like counselling sessions help in improving the symptoms.

Following your doctor’s advice will surely benefit you. Your doctor knows about the long term effects of the medicines so he will suggest the best treatment for you cautiously for your benefit.

You can try meditation, regular execising also helps to overcome depression. Make sure you mix with your family and friends. Talk about your thoughts rather than just isolating.

Seek positivity and do things that you love doing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
