Suggest Treatment For Rashes And Itching In The Underbelly Area

Hello, My father had an angioplasty in his abdomen for poor circulation in his left leg. His underbelly is itching and he had a rash on his chest yesterday...could this be an allergic reaction to the stent that was placed? Is this a common side effect? Should we be worried?

Hello,

Your father is suffering from rashes and itching in the under belly after angioplasty. Before angioplasty always tell your treating doctor history of any allergy you have, anaphylaxis, allergy to iodine dye, allergy to any medicine or asthma, etc. so that he may take adequate precautions. Common side effect is an allergic reaction to the contrast dye. This reaction may manifest itself in the form of itching or rash if mild.

Take care of his hygiene, he should wear soft cotton clothes and should not touch or scratch the area of the affected skin. He can apply calamine lotion or Soframycin ointment for relieve or he can also apply a thin layer of Hydrocortisone ointment on the area affected. Cold compress is also helpful. In case he develops breathing problems, vomiting, low blood pressure, and heartbeat disorders or numbness may also be felt in the front of the thighs and legs, you must inform to your treating doctor. Your father may need urgent medical support / aid.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
