Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Baker S Cyst On The Knee

I have had several surgeries on my left knee with a TKR being the last one. I have had a history of baker s cysts 2 removed when I was young, age 6 & 7, and then when the VA was doing my 3rd or 4th knee scope, the surgeon stated that he seen another baker s cyst on my knee but he left it alone. Now that I ve had a TKR, I m pretty sure that they cleaned everything out when they replaced the knee and put in the titanium hardware. Now 2 years later, I have another baker s cyst on the back of my knee but I also think there s one on my left ankle as well. Is this common and is this a problem and will they remove this considering it s causing some swelling/discomfort?

Hello,

There is no prevention for a Baker's cyst except minimizing any underlying arthritis disease.

Baker's cysts often resolve with aspiration (removal) of excess knee fluid in conjunction with a cortisone injection.

Medications are sometimes given to relieve pain and inflammation, including over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil.

When cartilage tears or other internal knee problems are associated, physical therapy or surgery can be the best treatment option.

During a surgical operation (typically by arthroscopy using an arthroscope), the surgeon can remove the swollen tissue (synovium) that leads to the cyst formation.

This is most commonly done with arthroscopic surgery. Physical therapy is often done in the recovery period.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
