Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Flank Pain

Hi, I m home on the sofa on a beautiful summer day with recurrent flank pain. I m taking 15 mg codeine sulfate 3x daily and it isn t touching the pain. I m told my R side pain is too low to be kidney related, even though it presented low (just below my waist) when I had kidney stones (R) in 1997 and an undiagnosed kidney infection in 2005. I have SLE (diagnosed in 1988) and used to have lupus cerebritis and before that severe migraines. I have a very high tolerance for pain. The urologist who diagnosed the 2005 kidney infection after the fact said I would have to be vigilant and complain more since I had already lost function of 1/3 or my right kidney when it swelled in capsule and ischemic eruptions occurred showing up as a dark piecrust-type edging to my R-kidney on CT scan. The urologist said I should be vigilant not to let similar damage happen to my good L kidney. In 2005 my damaged R was good enough to keep me going if something happened to the L, but I was not to fool with it. The urologist gave me Cypro to start on my own when the pain recurred, and said to call immediately for an appointment to be evaluated and to see if the Cypro needed to be continued. Unfortunately, this urologist retired and his partner thinks I m a wimp. My family doc tends to concur with the new urologist. Today the low flank pain extends into the back of my thigh and above the center of the pain in my flank to wrap around my side to my abdomen in front, just above the belly button. I m nauseous, I have no appetite, I m 59 DOB 1-17-1956, my next appointments with family doctor and rheumatologist are around Aug. 24, 2015 (160 mile round trip). Is there some test I can ask for that isn t as expensive as a CT scan to evaluate this pain? My kidney stones in 1997 never did show up on scans, but my rheumatologist where I used to live made a personal appeal to the urologist there to do surgery anyway after I had been discharged once and worsened. The urologist concluded there had to be a blockage even though it didn t show, and he found and removed 3 calcium-type stones. Thanks for your help. I love my docs, but I just don t scream enough, I guess.
