Suggest Treatment For Recurring Bumps On The Mouth

For the past two to three years I have had reoccurring bumps on the roof of my mouth. They always happen when I have a cold or something of that nature and I am always very mucus congested when I have them. The first time I got them I went to my ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat doctor) and he said they were a cause of mucus buildup that came down in the roof of my mouth. Over the years they have begun to happen more and more, and now that I am in college and living in a dorm they have already happened twice since the beginning of the school year. They are the same color as the rest of the roof of my mouth and they can become very painful and even get bigger. There are normally about 2 to 3 when they occur. I also have huge tonsils and my physician thinks they could be causing these bumps due to lots of infection building up. I will be having my tonsils removed this summer to see if this solves the problem, but I thought I would ask for more opinion on this occurence.

Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain recurring bumps in your mouth along with mucous congestion and huge tonsils are all indicating towards infection. As you have recurring post nasal drip leading to inflammation in throat, tonsils, it is the cause for inflammation of the roof of mouth and formation of bumps.

In case if you have congestion also there is a possibility that you have sinus infection or sinusitis also. I would suggest you to consult an otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS VIEW x ray or MRI of sinuses and sputum culture can help in diagnosis.

You can be advised to take a course of antibiotics like augmentin, anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen anti allergics like Benadryl, do warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room.

You can take decongestant nasal spray like xylometazoline, do saline nasal irrigation. You can also take mucolytics like ambroxol. Limit intake of cold and spicy food. Drink plenty of water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
