General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most probable causes are:
- Growth as suggested by your doctor is due to a condition called granuloma and few weeks of medical treatment can be tried
- CT scan of mastoids will help to find a cause
- Mastoiditis can also cause severe pain
- If the medical line of treatment fails then she may need 'revision surgery'
- Also to consider neuritis or so as a cause of severe pain like Trigeminal Neuralgia

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
