Suggest Treatment For Reoccurring Kidney Stones In A Teenager

My 19 yr old daughter has potentially reoccurring kidney stones. Passed a very small one in late April. And has had the same back pain as before beginning yesterday. She says it is the same pain as in April. We had a scan in the ER when this happened the first time and the doctor said it was a stone. We do not know what caused it as she was not aware when it passed. Anyway, she is currently on vacation in California and I am worried she will go through the same painful process but will not be at home. I can send her to an urgent care to get pain medicine. Is this the best plan?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Kidney stones cause severe pain while passing through the urinary tract.
The pain is quite severe and is not controlled by conventional painkillers like NSAIDs (a group of painkillers).
The pain is usually controlled by opoids.
You can advise your daughter to keep the healthcare providers well informed about her stone problem so that prompt is treatment can be provided when required.
Kidney stones may recur so a follow up is required to detect development of new stones.
Management of stones depend on the size of stones and its location.
I suggest you to consult an urologist once she is back from her vacation.

Thanks and take care
