Suggest Treatment For Ringing Sensation In The Ear

Do I need a referral to see a specialist (Otolarynoplogist). I hear a constant ringing in my right ear. Have always had extreme wax buildup. Saw my GP last Monday and probed my ear with a fine tool with a small donut on the end of it. When done put Polysporin in my ear. I have been adding mineral oil drops, trying home remedies (salt water, diluted hydrogen peroxide) but still ringing.

Hi,

Ringing in ears is known as tinnitus in medical terms and it can occur due to causes like an ear infection, perforated eardrum, excess ear wax accumulation, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc.

As the ringing has not yet subsided I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like audiometry, MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

The ear wax has to be removed and you can be advised antibiotic ear drops.

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.

White noise devices can be advised. You can also be advised neuromodulation. Avoid exposure to very loud sounds and also avoid diving, swimming etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
