Suggest Treatment For Scar Tissues On The Lung Lobes

After many years of having asthma and pneumonia I was told by my chest disease physician that I only have about 65% use of my lungs. There is a lot of scar tissue in the bottom lobes of both lungs. Do you know what the correct name is for this condition? Thank you. Marsha

Hello,

Scarring of lungs occurs in interstitial lung disease. It is also called as diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD). Scarring of lung is irreversible and occurs in the following conditions:
1) Previous viral infection or pneumonia
2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux
3) Smoking
4)older age
5) Tuberculosis (TB)
6) Exposure to asbestos or silica
7) Chemotherapy
8) Radiation therapy to the chest cavity
Treatment depends on cause.

1) Small scars often do not cause any adverse effects
2) Scars that remain unchanged for 2 years or more are not usually a cause for concern
3) Currently, a lung transplant is the only cure for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
4) However, a doctor can prescribe medications to help slow the progression of the disease and prevent flares. Pirfenidone (Esbriet) and Nintedanib (Ofev) are that have been proven effective
5) If there is flare up, hospitalization may be necessary
65% of your lungs are fine and it's a good sign. You may relax now.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
