Suggest Treatment For Severe Acid Reflux

Ive been told that i have gastritis. They docs said to eat stuff like broths, applesauce, jello, crackers, & things like that which isnt very specific. Ive only been eating the applesauce, jello, cracker, & watermelon. I tried eating 1 slice of plain bread & thought my heart was about to give out. I tried some chicken noodle soup & had to call 911 because i thought i was getting ready to have a heart attack. My heart was racing, i got lightheaded, my body got cold, & i started to sweat. Everything ive been eating is causing me to have serious chest pains or heartburn. This has been going on since 5/29/2015. No doc has an available appt until July. Omeprezol isnt working for me. What can i do to cure this or make it better. I havent had any real food since 5/30/2015. I am literally starving because i cant eat anything.

Hello,

This is a common issue that can cause many serious symptoms. Heartburn is usually treated with many types of medications that you can even find over the counter:

- Omeprazole or Pantoprazole or Esomeprazole can be used. Since your heartburn is so severe, either can be used at 40mg daily for a few weeks. You may only be taking 20mg of Omeprazole. You can also switch to Esomeprazole, which is through of to be stronger for some.

- Famotidine or Ranitidine can also be used. We don't often use these with the first type of medications, but they can be used together if your heartburn is severe.

- Sucralfate is prescription only but often used for gastric ulcers.

- Misoprostol is not used often but can also be used.

A bland diet that is not too spicy, not too sour, and not too greasy should be fine until the medications start to work.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong
