hi i started developing anxiety like symptoms about 3 years ago where it started in the gym the first time it hit and then went away for about a year then came back however this time i started to not being able to drive long distances nor go specific places. I quit smoking at that point and felt the improvement yet the feeling would randomly come back recently i flew over seas and the panic attacks hit hard again in which now i cant attend the prayer at the Mosque nor i can drive for long distances and i cant get on my motorcycle and ride for a mile without having crazy heart beats and shaky hands. I also started smoking hookah randomly and when i do i feel the symptoms as i smoke. Also the problem is progressing to where i cant go shopping and i cant go to the malls. at this point i cant work cuz i drive big rigs for a living and i cant get a grip on my life. my doctor told me to take zanax but i dont to sedated i want to be cured. any thoughts

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

What you are describing is consistent with generalized anxiety. The treatment of this problem is best achieved with a combination of an SSRI medication such as Lexapro combined with weekly cognitive behavioral therapy with a trained therapist. I recommend looking into one or ideally both of these options to help manage this problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
