Suggest Treatment For Severe Anxiety

Hi Dr Koregol. My heart infraction number is 13% and I am not an candidate for heart transplant due to breast cancer. The chemo caused the CHF and severely damaged my left ventricle. I have maintained a good positive attitude which I know is helpful but I m starting to have more anxiety as I get weaker. My doctor has recommended a LVAD but I feel the risk is too high for me. I know this device is used as a temporary measure while one awaits a heart transplant. I have not found any information on people who have lived with this implant for more than two years. My question is: In your opinion, what is the lowest infraction number that the heart can still function? I refuse to give up. I do everything in my power to stay as healthy as possible.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Anxiety and panic disorder is treatable. Medicines like SSRIs as sertraline, fluoxetine, paroxetine etc are commonly used to treat anxiety.

To overcome the anxiety you have to try relaxation exercises, yoga, meditation etc methods. Progressive muscle relaxation exercises, Breathing exercises help to reduce the frequency of anxiety attacks.

If symptoms are really causing impairment then consult a psychiatrist for treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
