Suggest Treatment For Severe Cold, Cough And Sore Throat

We have a situation - - boyfriend got sick with severe cold 01/13 - - developed a cough - -was sick for 3 weeks went to hospital. They quarantined him thinking it was pertussis. Negative. Did find a fungus (one that s found in pistachios and grapes in his sinuses. Treated with antifungals and that went away. Since then the cough has persisted (24/7) - they ve tested using throat and stomach scopes, thought it was GERD/Reflux - Negative. He had food poisoning 1 yr ago pretty severely. Also, he d been working on a mold house (he wears the hazmat suit, respirator, all the gear) - - He has been coughing since 01/13 of this year - has been out of work (note, he is a hardworking, vibrant man) since January. The doctors have given up on him - -He went to Brigham & Women s for many tests - -every specialist he s seen has done the same tests and found nothing. Currently, he describes symptoms as: persistent cough usually triggered by speaking, Chest feels like there s a hot iron on it, sore throat from coughing, and (this one s weird) feeling like you do when you go into a pool area that s highly chlorinated. We are at our wits end . . . .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It looks like your bf is presently having chest discomforts due to chronic cough. From history, he caught this cough due to fungal infection while working in the mold house.

He has mold allergy. Help him stay away from such work & areas of high pollution, dust, pollen, smoke, etc. As it will trigger his symptoms. He can take non-sedating antihistamines, like Levocetirizine for relief.

Get him physically examined by a GP to detect if he is having Asthma & to confirm no developing pathology in the chest. He will have to go through Blood tests & Imaging tests (X-ray, CT, etc), sputum examination /swab tests to rule out COPD.

Help him stay in fresh air & breath oxygen in a comfortable environment. His treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
