Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation And IBS

Hi Doctor, I have severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome/Constipation (diagnosed in 1988). I had been taking Librax until a generic, Chlordazepoxide-clidinium became available, which was much less expensive. Not sure when I switched to the generic but it must have been a decade(s) ago because all I remember is the generic at this point. The label indicates it comes from Oceanside Phar and the price for 30, 60 and/or 90 has skyrocketed. My 90-day mail in pharmacy (OptumRx) doesn t even carry it so I ve been getting it at grocery store pharmacy. Last month it cost $25.90 for 30 capsules. Called in for a refill yesterday & now it s $63.40 for 30 capsules. I m supposed to take it 3 times a day but when it jumped to $25.90 I could only afford 1 capsule a day. I absolutely will not be able to buy it at all. Thanks for listening. Suggestions?

Hi,

Constipation may be caused by several issues, however you should try first with changing lifestyle and dietary habits. You need to increase fiber intake.

Good fiber sources include bran and other whole grains found in cereals, breads, and brown rice, vegetables such as brussels sprouts, carrots, and asparagus, Fresh fruits, or dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, and prunes Beans.

Also, you should exercise regularly. Moving your body will keep your bowels moving, too.

Second, you may at times need to try a laxative such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, Milk of Magnesia, or glycerin suppositories.

If there won't be an improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry, and food allergy testing. In some cases, it may be also signed of tumors so it should be ruled out if symptoms persist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
