Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough After Esophagram
My husband had a espogram a week ago and has had a bad cough since swallowing the barium. I called and spoke with our doctor, he is not the one who did the espogram, he prescribed cough medicine with codeine and mucinex . Is thre something else we should be doing?
Your husband had an esophagram done, thereafter he has developed a bad cough. He should take sips of water throughout the day. He should keep cough lozenges in his mouth so that the mucosa of the throat does not get dry. He can take antihistamine at bed time, it will keep him comfortable and allergy symptoms will get controlled as there is a slight risk of allergic reaction.
Yes, he can take the medicines prescribed by the treating doctor. Sometimes, patients experience bloating, cramping or constipation after drinking the barium solution. Give him home made liquid or semi solid food so that he does not hurt the throat inside. For a couple of days avoid giving oily, spicy food. Give him well cooked, boiled or well mashed nutritious food and boiled fruits. These symptoms are temporary and should ease up after the barium has passed from the system.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
