Hi, I have had a terrible cough for a week & running 103.4 temp. I had a pre- op work up Monday so found out I have UTI also. I was already on amoxicillin since Monday but still feeling pain when uriating. Would it show up if I was tested again today after being on amoxicillin? Thank you, Videll YYYY@YYYY

Hello,
If I were your doctor, I would do 2 things right now:
1. A chest Xray to make sure you don't have pneumonia. I do not know if you had a chest X-ray on Monday when you had your pre-op work up, but even if it was negative then, it might show something now. A high fever plus cough definitely warrants a chest Xray.
2. When you were diagnosed with your UTI, your doctor may have sent the urine specimen for a "culture and sensitivity test" by the lab. That can show not only what bacteria is causing your UTI, but what antibiotic would be effective for it. So ask your doctor if one was done and what it showed. It is possible amoxicillin is not effective for your particular UTI. You can go back and give another specimen and ask/suggest that your doctor do a culture and sensitivity test if one wasn't done last time.

Will amoxicillin alter the results of a urine culture and make an infection not show up? It can alter it if the bacteria is "partially" sensitive to the amoxicillin. In other words, if the Amox is helping a bit but not completely. But it is still worth another test if a culture wasn't already done, and if your are still having pain after 3 days. I hope this helps you. But do get that chest X-ray! Best wishes.
