Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough At Night Despite Taking Medication

I’ve had a persistent tickle cough for a week now that’s worse at night. I’ve taken cold and flu tablets, cough syrup, hot drinks, throat lozenges, honey and lemon, drank loads of water but nothings working. The skin on my neck and chest is also hot and itchy (no visible rash). What is this and how can I cure it? I’ve been trying to sleep for 6 hours now and not managed even 6 seconds, help!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Persistent cough may be due to chronic bronchitis or COPD or bronchiectasis or nocturnal asthma or gastro esophageal reflux with cough or itching, mite allergy or sleep apnea etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Avoid cool drinks and frozen water, avoid smoking and alcohol intake.

Use water vapor inhalation and salt water gargling thrice a day for five days.

Use face mask, avoid room moisturizer at night.

Use tablet Levocetirizine.

If symptoms not improved, please consult your physician. He will examine and investigate then treat you accordingly.

Take care
