Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough In A Child

My 6 year old granddaughter has had a constant cough for months now, and problems with breathing. She has been coughing up yellow mucus. She has an inhaler, takes allergy mess daily, and breathing treatments when needed. The urgent care doc said she has allergies, and just dismisses her. This seems more serious than that. What more can be done?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
All the symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of allergic cough. But we have to rule out other condition before making a definite diagnosis.
I suggest you to consult a pediatrician and get the following things done:-
1.A chest X-ray to rule out other lung conditions.
2.Do sputum examination to rule out tuberculosis.
3.She might require nebulization using bronchodialtor drugs to control symptoms.
4.You can use nasal decongestant in case of blocked nostrils.
5.If signs of infection is there,A short course of antibiotics may be needed.
Once the diagnosis of allergic cough is made,She might require long term therapy with inhalers and anti allergic medicines.
The following preventive measures may help to avoid acute exacerbations of the symptom.
1.Avoid smoke and dust.
2.Avoid second hand smoking.
3.Avoid being in polluted places for prolonged periods

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards,
Dr.Shinas Hussain
