Suggest Treatment For Severe Coughing Spells While Suffering From Pneumonia

I was diagnosed with rt.upper lobe pneaumonia on Jan 29th and started on antibiotics for 10 days. I returned to urgent care on feb 12 because I still felt poorly. Ian 72 yr. old diabetic with hypertension. They told me to continue to rest and treat the symptoms. On feb26th I returned for a repeat chest X-ray and it showed the pneaumonia was unresolved. I still of coughing spells 2 or 3 times a day. So it s been over a month should I worry about more serious issues i.e. Lung cancer. Or does it takes longer to resolve because of my age and health issues? Beverly M.

Hi,

You need antibiotic coverage for a few days. As you are diabetic so you are more susceptible to chest infections and pneumonia. Continue coughing for more than one month definitely needs attention.

Report to the emergency room, you may need sputum tests, CBC, spirometry etc. As you are medically compromised due to diabetes so report there as soon as possible so that after proper and thorough evaluation and examination you can be treated in a better way.
