Suggest Treatment For Severe Depression And Anxiety

My daughter has been experiencing severe depression , anxiety with psychosis. She has recently been released from a behavioral medicine ward at a hospital. She is currently taking Ativan/trazodone and abilify She tells her mom and I that she has vivid images of demons telling her to end her life. Plus she says that her vision is blurred and she is always dizzy. Could these be a by-product of taking these drugs? If so do you have any ideas of what to do. This has all been going on for at least a month

Hello,

The ill health of the near and dear ones can be very stressful and this time its your own mother.

I understand that you are on 100mg sertraline and 4 mg lorazepam in 2 divided doses, but still, your depressive symptoms are very much evident.

I guess along with these medicines, it would be worthwhile to have some psychotherapy sessions as well.

Supportive psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are good options. In supportive psychotherapy, the therapist will try to vent out your distress and denial and that will make you feel better.

Cognitive Behavioural therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them.

They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help you with your illness. Both these therapies will help you along with the medicines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
