Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have suffered from what I thought was depression my entire life. I have tried many different meds over the years but the side effects are worse than the feelings I have. I have lost interest in everything and find it hard to find pleasure in anything. I am 53 years old. I have tried counseling also. I really do not know where to turn.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Most of individuals respond to antidepressant drugs but for patients of resistent depression combination of drugs is advised. You have tried multiple medicines and still the symptoms of depression are persisting. In case of resistent depression antidepressants are augmented with other medicines. SSRIs or SNRIs are commonly used medicines and help to reduce the depression. Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Sertraline, Venlafaxine etc are used commonly. These medicines are augmented with medicines like lamotrigine, lithium, bupropion or buspirone. Combination of drugs results in relief of resistent depression symptoms.
Cognitive therapy is other modality of treatment of depression. In cognitive therapy faulty though processes and cognitive distortions are corrected by progressive sessions. Visit a psychiatrist for help and evaluation.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care.
