Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea

I ve had diarrhea for 3 full days now. It lets up for a while but comes back with a vengeance. I ve tried Pepto Bismol and Immodiam AD, but it hasn t helped. I ve been eating light and drinking water, but still no relief. It seems to be a virus since the people I was around just before it started have been sick too. Should I see a doctor or just let it run its course?

Hi,

As per your complaint diarrhea can be due to causes like viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning, parasitic infestation, food intolerance, food allergies, laxative abuse, excess intake of tea and coffee, electrolyte imbalance etc.

As of now you should start taking anti-diarrhea medication like Loperamide, take fluid replacement therapy that is to drink plenty of oral rehydration salts by dissolving in water and take more of banana, yoghurt, rice and cereals.

In case of no resolution in next 3 to 4 days consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests and stool culture can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

You can be advised antibiotics, Albendazole etc., depending upon the cause diagnosed. If it is due to food allergies the cause will be ruled out and eliminated from your diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
