Suggest Treatment For Severe Ear Pain

i occasionally have ear pain. As I m having right now in fact. A few years ago I went to my doctor because my usual course, ear drops, wasn t having any effect. He put some warm liquid in my ear and manipulated my ear for a few minutes and it eventually popped and I felt the pain go away. I ve been gently putting warm water in and around my ear and manipulating my ear, but so far I only have pain from the manipulation. Should I use a specialty liquid, perhaps salt in the water? Or is the warm water enough? b42

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is not recommended to frequently put warm water or other things in the ear as this may risk infection. Probably this is the reason why you are experiencing worsened earache.

Warm water was likely used to bring out the wax, and if the doctor removed it in the office, you do not need to do the same at home as there will not be any wax there anymore.

It is best that you talk to your doctor again and explain your worsening. Ear drops will very likely be prescribed and in some cases, oral antibiotics may be added as well.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
