Suggest Treatment For Severe Headache With History Of Car Accident

I had been having throbbing headache for more than a week now. Back in 1985, I was involved in a car accidents which I had sustained horrific head injuries. And while the injuries are only evident with scars these days, they have become a little irritated with this latest episodes of headaches. I am not having cough or flu, but when I do try to cough to clear my throat or sneeze, I felt like my brain inside is about to explode - on the side or at the back of my head. As it is winter now in NZ, sometimes I do not understand if I am having a fever, or am experiencing extreme cold that seeps into my the core of my bones. I am only taking panadol at the moment, and sometimes it helps during the day, but at night, I just couldn t stand the pain that it wakes me up and keeps me up until morning.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Often after a traumatic brain injury there remain signs like chronic headache or abnormal sensations like the one you describe. The most appropriate treatment is in my opinion an antidepressive like amitriptyline which is also a first line treatment in headache prevention as well as for those abnormal sensations. It is a prescription drug so you must discuss its use with your primary physician as well.

I hope to have been of help.
