Suggest Treatment For Severe Heel Pain

My partner is an 80 year old male. His right heel in the Achilles tendon area has been hurting for several days. The appearance now is a dark purple. This concerns me. Can you suggest something to help? He takes ibuprofen, has iced it a few times and trues to elevate it a few times a day. Thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, severe heel pain at the age of 80 years can be part of calcaneal heel spur development, loss of subcutaneous fat pad acting as cushion, osteoporosis consequences or others. Though ibuprofen and icing will help for a particular period of time, I would recommend him to get an X-ray of the heel with calcaneum to find out the basic reason after consulting with his doc. Till that time, pressure off loading with soft cushion slippers and shoes will help a lot along with avoidance of walking barefoot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
