Suggest Treatment For Severe Leg Pain

I was hospitalized about a month ago overnight for SEVERE leg pain in my right thigh. I broke out in a sweat all over, my hearing became distorted, and I began to pass out. I could not breathe except to gasp for breath. My husband called 911 and I went to ER. My D-dimer was 2000 so they kept me overnight. They did an ultrasound of both legs and found no clots. A lung scan was done the next day with negative results (could not have CT scan of lungs with dye since extremely allergic to dye). I was told to make an appointment with my regular doctor within the week. I did see my doctor but he said he had no idea about my situation. He would give my file to one of the interns there to review. I have had no additional contact from my doctor or any other. On Tuesday evening this week, the same scenario repeated itself except not quite a severe and I was able to breathe. After about 30-45 minutes the symptoms subsided as I tried to walk back and forth in the house and also took a muscle relaxer. My thigh is still very sore, particularly on the interior of the mid-thigh.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves. If this is not your case then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form.

You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures. Also, you should have Aspirin 100 mg and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks.

In most cases it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
