Suggest Treatment For Severe Migraine And Nausea After Taking Lamotrigine

Hi my daughter was given lamotrigine 25mg to help her sleep, starting on Tuesday of this last week. She spent most of that night nauseated and woke up with a severe migraine. The doctor told her not to take it on Wednesday night but to start instead on Thursday night taking 1/2 of a dose. She has been throwing up and being nauseated through the night last night and still has a terrible headache. Now the glands on either side of her throat are feeling swollen and she said her head is full of pressure, her eyes feel swollen. She s been feeling very hot, but does not have a fever. If she eats or drinks anything she gets sick. My question is. . . if she doesn t take the lamotrigine again will that we okay or does she have to taper off of it after only having taken it for three nights?

Hi,

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that her symptoms could be related to an infection or Lamotrigine adverse effects.

Coming to this point, I would recommend bringing your daughter at the ER for a physical exam and some tests (complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation, blood electrolytes.)

Lamotrigine may need up to a month to start its effects on migraine, so other drugs should be used for headache control during this period of time.

But, as all this situation started after starting Lamotrigine, a possible intolerance to Lamotrigine should be considered.

You should discuss with her doctor on the above issues.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ilir Sharka,
