I have severe misophonia and I can't be around certain people when they are eating. It make me angry and sad and I sometimes start crying. It's only getting worse and people are starting to hate me for having to leave the room during meals. I don't know how to fix it.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Misophonia or Hatered of Sounds is a uncommon psychiatric condition that cause significant distress to social functioning. Some traits of misophonia are commonly seen in most individuals but if the symptoms start impairing the social interaction and result in significant anger then there is need to consult a psychiatrist. It is not a formal psychiatric disorder but can be diagnosed by proper clinical history.
Best treatment for misophonia is Cognitive Therapy and Relaxation exercises by a good psychologist. Cognitive therapy helps to reduce the symptoms and also reduce the anger. If your anger is severe and is causing distress then medicines like SSRIs can help. Sertraline, Paroxetine etc can help to reduce the stress and will help in improved social functioning. Please consult a psychiatrist for treatment.
Thanks, Hope this helps you.
Take care
