Suggest Treatment For Severe Muscle Cramps And Spasms In Jaw Area

hi in the last two to three months I have been having severe muscle cramps. I had a spasm in my jaw for the first time last night. I do have rls but also my calcium and potassium are in a normal range. I also have type 2 diabetes, any ideas on what could be causing this to keep happening multiple times a day?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM team.

Understanding your concern.

As you mention in your query that you have severe muscle cramps for last 2-3 months and you are having cramps in jaw muscle .Well your symptoms seems to be clear cut complications of diabetes type 2 ,because you have normal calcium and potassium level .

The condition in which muscle cramps occur due to diabetes is called 'diabetic neuropathy' (nerve damage ).The probable reason for jaw muscle cramps is also diabetic neuropathy .The most important thing you can do in this situation is to keep your sugar level in target range .

I would suggest you to take over the counter pain reliving medicines like declofenac or ibuprofen(if you are not allergic to it )take physical therapy for some time ,take rest and you can take certain supplements which are suppose repair nervous system like alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin b12.

If condition doesn't improve or worsen consult doctor .Also consult dentist once to rule out any dental problem ,which can also be the cause of jaw muscle cramps.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
get well soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
