Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain And Numbness In Leg

Large right paracentral L5/S1 disc extrusion causing severe lateral recess narrowing and compressing the right traversing S1 nerve root.

The above is the conclusion on MRI scan of my lower lumbar spine taken a couple of weeks ago. I've been referred to specialist and am waiting on appoint date. In meantime, off to see my GP again tomorrow. Pain in my right leg is unbearable! Numbness pins & needles in foot. Burning feeling in calf and leg. Only way to get relief is flat out on back with right leg up. What pain relief options are available to me? My GP seems to think I will need an operation.
