Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain And Numbness In Tailbone Radiating To Arms And Legs

Hello, I have had severe pain and numbness in my tailbone all the way up my back and down my arm and leg since the birth of my child ten years ago. I have been told time and time again that what I have is nerve damage and there is nothing to be done. Help!

Hello,

You are suffering from severe tailbone pain, numbness radiating to the arms and legs. You are suffering this since childbirth. Difficult child birth can cause a bruised, broken or dislocated coccyx. It can also cause nerve damage leading to neuropathy. Control your blood sugar level to control the symptoms from worsening. If obese, loose weight. Maintain healthy weight.

Extra weight causes additional pressure to the coccyx. This can cause the coccyx to lean backward. Your tailbone will hurt if it is out of position. Sometime, difficult child birth may stretch the muscles and ligaments around the coccyx too far and causes complications. Maintain proper sitting posture, avoid sitting on a hard or narrow surface. Do your best to get up often, stretch and take a short walk.

Prefer to sit on a softer, more comfortable place to sit or use a cushioned seat. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedist and a neurologist. Get X-ray, CT scan, MRI (if required), nerve conduction velocity tests, etc. to detect the pathology so that treatment can be started at the earliest. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.

Take a NSAID like Ibuprofen, or Combiflam, after food to reduce pain and swelling. Include anti inflammatory food in your regular diet. Take food good for the nerves to help nerve repair. Take vitamin B6, B12, folic acid supplements. Decrease sitting time. Lean forward if you have to sit. Taking a hot bath may help to relax muscles and ease pain.

Be gentle with yourself. Always use a 'donut' pillow when sitting. Take stool softeners to reduce pain during bowel movements. Applying hot or cold packs to your lower back may help. Do it 2-3 times a day. Stretching exercises and posture improvement guided by a physical therapist.

You will be given conservative treatment but your treating doctor may recommend surgery if needed. Lie on your side to reduce tailbone pain. Avoiding activities that worsen symptoms such as cycling and sitting for long periods of time. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
