Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In Left Ear, Neck And Face

I had a septoplasty 3 weeks ago and am healing well. This was done to fix chronic otitis media and collapsed eustachian tubes and in order to have a Tympanoplasty. I have been having bad pain in my left ear (where tympano will be done), into left neck and left face/jaw/teeth. I think it s my trigeminal nerve (I m an RN) but pain medicine is not helping much. Is ice or heat better? Anything else to try?

Hello,

You are having severe pain in the left ear, neck, jaw and face. You are also having pain in the left ear, where tympanoplasty will be done. Pain may be due to post operative infection, pain can also be caused by the collection of blood in the septal packing inside the nose maxillary sinus, etc. Pain may be an indication of post operative neuralgia. Yes, it can be due to the irritations of the trigeminal nerve. You are suggested to get a follow up examination done by your treating surgeon.

You may require to get done repeat blood tests and imaging tests so that the pathology causing the symptoms can be detected and treatment started at the earliest. Since tympanoplasty has to be done, the infection and any pathology causing the pain will have to be treated first. Get treated at the earliest. You can take NSAIDs, Combiflam or Naproxen, one stat after food, when pain. It will give you relieve.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
