Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Ring Finger While On Simvastatin

My hands fall asleep and are very stiff and painful. My ring finger on both hands are locked in a half bent position every morning when I get up. My fingers are painful to move with difficulty making a fist or completely straightening out. I take simvastatin and tricot for cholesterol and high triglycerides as well as loser tin for blood pressure. Also take metformin for diabetes. This issue with my hands has been going on for a few months but has gotten considerably worse recently.

Hi & Welcome.
Incomplete data like age, gender, any associated symptoms like morning stiffness, fever, fatigue, etc.

Simvastatin is an important blood cholesterol lowering drug effectively used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Its most common side effects include myopathy (muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness), stomach upset and liver dysfunction.

TriCor (Fenofibrate) helps reduce cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
and thus used to treat high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels. Its most common side effects include myopathy, gallstones, and stomach upset.

When taken together the risk of getting myopathy gets increased.

Based on the history given you seem to have developed myopathy involved the muscles of the hand. I would therefore advise you to stop taking these medications after consulting your doctor and an alternative effective but safer medication like bile acid binding resin (Cholestyramine) to be taken to lower the cholesterol and triglycerides.

Alternatively your doctor might consider the use of Fluvastatin extended release, every-other-day dosing of Atorvastatin or rosuvastatin, and twice weekly Rosuvastatin. These statins have a lower potential to cause myopathy.

Besides these, you also need to be properly evaluated to rule out the possibility of rheumatoid arthritis by relevant lab tests such as CBC, ESR, Rh factor, Anti nuclear antibodies, Anti CCP, etc.

Hope the advice given above would be useful.
